Every so often someone watches me pull a steel tape round the outside of a house and asks why I’m not using the laser. The answer is that I am using the laser — indoors, room after room, where it is unbeatable — and the tape is doing the jobs the laser cannot. An RdSAP assessment wants external girths: you cannot laser your way around the perimeter of a building, but you can walk a tape round it. A curved bay window has no flat face to bounce a beam off. Rain scatters a laser dot into nothing, bright sun drowns it. And when a laser gives a figure that smells wrong, the tape is the sanity check that settles it.
So the tape is not the obsolete tool in the bag; it is the reference tool, and worth buying properly. A good one stands out three metres unsupported so you can measure a ceiling height alone; a bad one collapses at arm’s length. A good one has its accuracy class printed on the blade — most people have owned tapes for decades without ever looking — and a hook that is loose on purpose, the most misunderstood feature in the toolbox.

Standout, honestly measured. Standout is how far the blade extends unsupported before it buckles, and it is the difference between measuring a ceiling height or a stairwell alone and needing a second pair of hands you don’t have. Anything over 3m of real standout covers survey work. Treat the printed claims with suspicion, though: manufacturers measure standout with the blade curved upward at the ideal angle in still air, and owner feedback routinely knocks half a metre or more off the number on the packet. Wider, deeper-curved blades stand out further — which is why this criterion and the next are really one.
Blade width and coating. A 32mm blade stands out further, reads more easily, and lies flatter along a wall than a 19mm one; the trade-off is a fatter case and more effort to bend it into a corner. Coatings matter more than steel: the first 150mm of any tape dies first, dragged over brick and concrete a thousand times, so look for reinforced first metres (Stanley’s Blade Armor, DeWalt’s Rip-Shield) or a full nylon coat. An uncoated blade loses its printed numbers exactly where you use them most.
The hook — and why it is loose. The end hook slides on its rivets by design: precisely the thickness of the hook itself. Pull the tape against the hook for an outside measurement and the slack takes the hook’s thickness out; push it against a wall for an inside measurement and the hook slides in to compensate. Either way you read true zero, and a hook that has been bent, or riveted solid by a well-meaning owner, lies on every measurement. What to look for: a big multi-riveted hook that grabs top, bottom and sides, and — genuinely convenient on steel lintels and railings — a magnet.
The accuracy class printed on the blade. Look near the start of the blade for a small “I” or “II” beside the CE marking — the EC accuracy class, and most people have never once looked for it. Class I permits roughly half a millimetre of error over 5m; Class II roughly 1.3mm; a tape with no class marking at all is permitted to be whatever it happens to be. For survey work Class II is entirely adequate — nobody’s EPC changes over a millimetre — but the marking tells you the maker submitted the blade to a standard, which is worth knowing at any price.
The lock and the brake. A good lock holds the blade dead still without creeping, and releases without a fight. Better still is a finger brake — a pad below the blade exit that lets you feather the blade’s return with a fingertip instead of letting eight metres of steel snap home at speed. Retraction snap is how hooks get bent and fingertips get sliced, and it is why a tape should be walked back, not fired back.

It is a Class II blade, metric-only on this reference (a metric/imperial version, 0-33-726, exists for those who want both), and the whole thing costs about the same as an hour of anyone’s time. The Gen II adds a magnetic hook — genuinely useful against steel lintels, railings and van racking — and a finger stop above the blade exit for controlling the return. Published user feedback is strong on blade life, which is the thing that actually retires tapes. You pay a third more than the FatMax for it; whether the extra ruggedness earns that depends on how hard your tape’s life is.

Komelon is a Korean firm that makes blades for half the industry, and the PowerBlade II is the quiet bargain of the category: a 27mm hi-vis blade printed on both faces — so the numbers read right-way-up whether you’re measuring off the floor or under a joist — with a full nylon coat and, on current versions, a magnetic hook. Owner feedback is consistently warmer than the price suggests it should be. The narrower blade gives up some standout to the 32mm heavyweights, and the case is more workmanlike than rugged, but as the tape that does nine-tenths of the job for two-fifths of the money it is very hard to argue with.

Tajima is the tape Japanese joiners swear by, and the Hi-Lock’s party piece is the thing almost no tape offers: EC Class I accuracy — roughly half a millimetre of permitted error over the full 5m — worn proudly on the case rather than hidden in small print. The lock is a solid slide that clamps without creep. For survey girths Class I is overkill; where it earns its place is checking other instruments — if your laser and this tape disagree, believe the tape — and any setting-out where a millimetre actually matters.

Best specialist — internal measurements without arithmetic, and it marks its own line
The Swedish oddball, and a cult object for a reason. The Talmeter’s case length is part of its calibrated measurement, so an internal dimension — window reveal, alcove, cupboard — is read directly off a separate scale with no “add the case, roughly” fudge. The blade end carries a scriber, so a locked measurement can be scratched straight onto timber without a pencil. It is Class II, and completely wrong as an only tape: 3m, a narrow 16mm blade, no standout to speak of. As a second tape for anyone who regularly measures reveals and openings, it does things nothing else on this page can.

At around a fiver, the Amtech asks a fair question: what do you actually lose? Quite a lot, honestly — no stated accuracy class, modest standout from the 25mm blade, a hook that owner feedback suggests can work loose beyond its designed slack, and printing that wears where the blade meets brick. What you get is a tape that reads the same as any other over a doorway and costs so little it can live permanently in the glovebox, the loft and the kitchen drawer. As a household tape or a spare, fine. As the tape a measurement of record depends on, no.

5m or 8m. An 8m tape girths most detached houses in two or three legs, reaches across any domestic room, and measures a full-height gable; a 5m means more legs, more pencil marks and more chances to lose 100mm somewhere. The price of the 8m is bulk. My answer for survey work is unambiguous: 8m on the belt, with something like the 5m Tajima as the pocket tape. What I would not buy is 10m in a conventional case — past 8m the case becomes a housebrick, and a laser or a surveyor’s fibreglass reel does the long work better.
Tape beats laser; laser beats tape. Indoors, room to room, a laser measure wins on speed and it isn’t close. The tape wins everywhere the laser physics fails: outside in rain or glare, around a curved bay where there is no flat target, on external girths where the measurement follows the building rather than a straight line, and on anything under about half a metre where hooking and reading is quicker than aiming. And the two together are worth more than either alone — a laser is electronics, and electronics drift, mislead through glass and mismeasure off dark surfaces; a steel blade with a class marking is the cheapest calibration check you will ever own.
Look after the hook. Most “inaccurate” tapes are accurate tapes with a damaged hook. Letting the blade snap home at full speed hammers the hook against the case mouth and gradually bends it; a bent hook shifts your zero on every job. Feather the return with a finger (or buy one of the tapes here with a brake), and check zero occasionally by measuring a known distance both hooked-over and pushed-against — the two readings should agree.
What the salesmen push that you can skip. Heroic standout numbers — useful up to a point, but the difference between a claimed 3.3m and 4.2m is a party trick you will use twice a year, bought with case bulk you carry every day. Dual metric/imperial blades, which halve the printing size of the units you actually use; metric-only is cleaner, and RdSAP has no interest in feet. And rubber “armour” beyond a sensible amount — the blade coating and the hook rivets determine a tape’s lifespan, not another 10mm of overmoulding. Read the small print for the accuracy class instead; plenty of £30 tapes never state one.
Questions I get asked
Why is the end of my tape measure loose? It is supposed to be. The hook slides on its rivets by exactly its own thickness, so that an outside measurement (hook pulled taut) and an inside measurement (hook pushed against a surface) both read from true zero — the sliding hook adds or subtracts its own thickness automatically. A hook that has been glued, riveted solid or “fixed” reads wrong in one direction forever. If the slack ever exceeds the hook’s thickness — usually after years of snap-back abuse — the tape is worn out, not the feature broken.
Is a 5m or 8m tape measure better? For anything to do with buildings, 8m. It spans whole rooms, full gables and most external elevations in one pull, and the wide blades that come with 8m tapes stand out further for solo work. 5m suits joinery, furniture and pockets. The honest answer for anyone measuring buildings regularly is both — an 8m workhorse and a 5m pocket tape — which together still cost less than one laser measure.
What does Class 1 or Class 2 mean on a tape measure? It is the EC accuracy class, printed on the blade near the start alongside the CE mark. Class I allows roughly 0.6mm of error over 5m, Class II roughly 1.3mm; a tape with no marking has made you no promise at all. Class II is the trade standard and comfortably accurate enough for survey and building work; Class I matters for setting out, joinery and checking other instruments.
Do surveyors still use tape measures? Constantly. The laser took over internal room dimensions years ago, but external girths for EPC floor-area calculations, curved and irregular elevations, short check measurements and anything in rain or bright sun are still steel-tape jobs. On most of my assessments the laser and the tape come out of the same pocket within ten minutes of each other — they are colleagues, not rivals.
