The practice.

Independent building surveyor, domestic energy assessor and retrofit assessor. Hartfield, East Sussex. Practitioner-led, plain-English, fixed fees.

Hello, I’m Dom.

I run an independent surveying practice from Hartfield, East Sussex, working with homeowners, landlords and small developers across Kent, Sussex, Surrey and London.

The practice has one full-time surveyor — me. Every report you receive is one I’ve walked, measured, written and signed. There is no junior, no template-and-tweak, no white-label sub-contracting. I’m an Associate Member of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (ACABE). Email is the best way to reach me; if you ring, your call is answered, your details taken, and I’ll ring you back the same day.

What you’ll get

  • Plain-English reports. No jargon for its own sake. If a recommendation needs technical language, it’ll be there — alongside a translation.
  • A fixed fee, agreed up front. No sliding scale, no “extras” on completion. You’ll know what it costs before I instruct.
  • A working relationship, not a transaction. Most clients ring after the report to talk through it. That call is included.
  • Independence. No introducer fees, no kickbacks from contractors, no recommended-builder list with hidden incentives.
  • Fully insured and DBS checked. Professional indemnity cover is in place and I’m DBS checked — peace of mind when I’m in your home.

How I work

Site visits are typically two to four hours for a domestic property. I take a long look at the structure, the envelope, the services, the drainage and the immediate ground; photograph what matters; and check the things that often get missed because they’re uncomfortable to access.

The report follows within five working days for most surveys. Energy assessments are quicker — the certificate is usually lodged the same day as the visit. Retrofit assessments take longer, because the analysis is deeper and the deliverable feeds into a wider design process.

If a property is unusual — listed, traditionally built, off-grid, recently extended, or has a quirky history — that’s the kind of work I most enjoy.

Software — iCalendar.app

Alongside the practice I’m the founder of iCalendar.app, the booking software I built to run my own diary. Surveying is a driving job, and every booking tool I tried only asked whether the diary was empty — never whether I could actually get from one appointment to the next. iCalendar.app checks real driving times before it offers a client a slot, works around fixed commitments like the school run, takes card payment, invoices, and logs the mileage. It now runs the diaries of other surveyors, energy assessors and mobile trades as well as mine.

The practical upshot for clients here: when I give you a date, I’ve already checked I can get to you.

Directorship — EPC Near Me

I’m also a co-director of EPC Near Me (EPC-NEARME Limited, company no. 14102285) — a national directory that puts homeowners, landlords and agents in touch with accredited domestic energy assessors covering their town, alongside CPD training and a free lookup for certificates already on the national register.

Training — Energy Trust

I’m a trainer and assessor at Energy Trust, working with candidates qualifying as Domestic Energy Assessors and Retrofit Assessors — delivering the training, then assessing the portfolios and site work that decide whether someone is signed off to practise. Several hundred students so far, both in person and over Zoom. For that work I hold the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) and the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA).

It feeds straight back into the surveying. Explaining an RdSAP convention or a PAS 2035 risk assessment to people who’ll be inspecting real houses next month is the quickest way to find the soft spots in your own thinking.

Coverage

The practice covers Kent, Sussex, Surrey and London. Postcode areas regularly worked: TN, RH, ME, DA, BR, SE, E, RM, KT, CR, SM, BN. If you’re outside that radius and the job is right, get in touch — I’ll travel.
