Before anyone drills anything — a shelf bracket, a radiator, a cavity inspection hole for a borescope — the wall gets scanned. That is the rule on site and it should be the rule at home, because the two most expensive holes in British housing are the one through a pipe and the one through a live cable. A stud finder’s day job sounds humble, find the timber, but the same pass tells you what else is in the wall, and that is where the categories start to matter.
There are really three technologies on sale. Magnetic finders don’t detect studs at all — they find the steel screws and nails holding the board to the studs, which amounts to the same thing and can’t be fooled. Capacitive (electronic) finders read changes in density through the surface, which works well on uniform plasterboard and falls apart on anything lumpy. And radar wall scanners — the Bosch D-tect family being the ones you actually see on site — send a signal into the wall and read reflections, which is how you see plastic pipes and objects deep in masonry that nothing capacitive will ever find.
The complication is that UK walls are not American walls. Most of the stud-finder market is designed for 12.5mm drywall over timber at regular centres. We have that — but we also have dot-and-dab plasterboard over blockwork, solid brick under three coats of plaster, and lath-and-plaster in anything pre-war, all of which confuse a cheap capacitive sensor into either silence or hysteria. Which tool to buy depends almost entirely on which walls you have.

Does it suit the wall in front of you? This is the whole question. On modern plasterboard over timber or metal studs, a good capacitive finder is quick and accurate. On dot-and-dab, capacitive readings mean very little — the adhesive dabs read as “studs” and the voids read as nothing. On lath-and-plaster, capacitive sensors are close to useless: the plaster thickness varies with every trowel stroke, and the laths themselves are a continuous band of timber. There, a magnet finding the lath nails, or radar, are the only honest options.
Edge-finding, not centre-guessing. A fixing wants the middle of a 38mm stud, not the edge of it. Tools that show you both edges at once — the multi-sensor Franklins do this natively — beat single-sensor sweepers that ask you to approach from both sides and split the difference. Every extra step is a chance to mark the wall wrong.
Honest live-wire behaviour. Almost everything electronic now claims AC detection. The small print matters: these sensors typically only see live, unscreened cables within about 50mm of the surface, and they miss cables in metal capping or conduit, cables on switched-off circuits, and anything behind foil-backed board. Repeatability. The classic failure of cheap capacitive finders is calibrating on a stud by accident, then confidently reporting the rest of the wall backwards. A tool that gives the same answer on the same spot five times running is worth three modes and an LCD that doesn’t.
Field manners. Common batteries, one-handed operation, a display you can read at an angle on top of a ladder, and a shape that lets you mark the wall while the tool is still on it. The Bosch GMS gets a small nod here for the pencil hole in the middle of the housing — someone at Bosch has actually hung a radiator.

Franklin’s trick is architectural rather than clever software: thirteen capacitive sensors in a row, all reading at once, with LEDs above whichever ones see timber. That eliminates the two things people actually hate about stud finders — the calibration sweep (there isn’t one) and the ambiguity (you see the stud’s full width, not a beep somewhere near it). It reads to around 38mm, deep enough for double-boarded walls, flags live wiring, and shows two studs at once where they’re doubled up around an opening.
The honest limits: it is a plasterboard instrument. On dot-and-dab it will find adhesive dabs as enthusiastically as any other capacitive tool, and lath-and-plaster defeats it like everything else in its class. This is a different instrument to everything else here. Radar doesn’t care whether an object is denser than plaster — it reads reflections, which is how the D-tect finds plastic pipes (invisible to every other technology on this page), rebar and cables at depths a capacitive sensor can’t dream of: metal to a claimed 120mm, plastic pipes and live cables to 60mm, timber to 38mm, with dedicated modes for concrete, drywall and damp masonry. It runs on Bosch’s 12V batteries or AAs with the adapter.
For survey and retrofit work — deciding where a cavity inspection hole goes, checking a wall before a through-wall vent is cored — this class of tool is the responsible answer, and the D-tect 120 is its accessible end. For hanging shelves it is absurd. Both things are true.

The GMS 120-27 is the updated version of the detector half the trades have carried for a decade. It combines an inductive metal sensor — steel to a claimed 120mm, copper to 80mm, so it works in solid masonry where capacitive tools are blind — with live-cable detection to 50mm and a capacitive wood-stud mode to 38mm. Centre-marking is handled with a physical hole through the housing: find the object, pencil through the middle.
Owner feedback runs the way it always has for this family: excellent on metal and cables, more temperamental in the wood-stud mode, which is single-sensor capacitive and needs a calibrated, steady sweep. Buy it as a metal-and-cable scanner for mixed and solid walls that also does studs, not the other way round.

Search “stud finder” on Amazon and the results are a wall of interchangeable £20–£30 multi-mode scanners; the HANMATEK SF1 is a consistent chart-topper and representative of the breed. Wood mode to about 38mm, metal to 60mm, an AC mode, an LCD with depth and centre indication. Owner feedback follows the pattern of the whole class: works acceptably on uniform plasterboard if you calibrate on a hollow bay and sweep slowly; produces confident nonsense on dot-and-dab, textured plaster and anything old. The original Zircon MultiScanners that defined this category barely have a UK retail presence now, and the generics have filled the gap. The Walabot pairs with an Android or iOS phone and uses RF imaging to show what’s behind the wall as a picture — studs, pipes, wires, even movement, to a claimed 100mm. The technology is real and the demo videos are seductive. The practical record, from published user feedback, is more mixed: it officially supports plasterboard and concrete only (lath-and-plaster and tiled walls are explicitly out), it needs calibration sweeps and a protective film on the wall, and the “X-ray image” mode is more interpretive art than photograph. Where it earns its keep is concrete — tracing rebar and services at depth for less than a fifth of D-tect money. On an ordinary British stud wall, the Franklin answers the actual question faster.

Match the tool to the wall, then stop. Modern plasterboard on studs: the Franklin, and you’re done. Solid masonry and mixed walls: the GMS 120-27, because what you’re really scanning for is metal and cables, not timber. Lath-and-plaster: the magnet, patience, and a pencil. Concrete, or professional liability: radar. There is no single tool that does all four well, which is why the trades carry two.
Scanning is not a substitute for thinking. Cables in UK homes are supposed to run in prescribed “safe zones” — vertically and horizontally from every switch, socket and fitting, and in bands near wall junctions. Before any detector comes out, look at where the sockets are: the wiring layout is half-predictable from the plaster line. The detector then confirms, rather than discovers. And no capacitive AC warning clears a wall — a cable in capping, a switched-off circuit or one 60mm deep simply doesn’t register. If you’re drilling anywhere near suspected services, that’s a job for a proper voltage and cable detector, not a stud finder’s bonus feature.
What the marketing pushes that you can skip. “5-in-1” mode counts, colour LCDs, and headline depth figures. The depth spec is a best case measured into a uniform test block, not your 1930s bonded plaster; treat every claimed millimetre with the same suspicion as a car’s official fuel economy. A tool with one mode that’s trustworthy beats five modes that each need interpreting. And nobody needs Bluetooth in a stud finder.

Questions I get asked
Do stud finders work on lath-and-plaster walls? Capacitive ones, essentially no — the plaster varies in thickness, the laths are continuous timber, and the sensor sees studs everywhere or nowhere. The reliable methods are magnetic (sweep for the nails that fix the laths; they cluster in vertical lines on every stud) or radar. Failing that, the old-fashioned way: find one stud by knocking or by a nail hole at skirting level, then measure — historic studwork is commonly at 350–450mm centres, though never trust it to be regular.
Can a stud finder detect electrical cables? Within strict limits. The AC-warning feature on electronic stud finders senses the field around a live, unshielded cable, typically within 50mm of the surface. It won’t see cables in metal conduit or capping, cables on a circuit that’s switched off, screened cable, or anything deeper. Treat a warning as a hard stop and the absence of a warning as no information. For actual cable tracing — or before coring through a wall — use a dedicated detector and turn the circuits off anyway.
What’s the difference between a stud finder and a wall scanner? Marketing, mostly, but there’s a real distinction underneath. A stud finder answers one question about hollow stud walls: where’s the timber. A wall scanner — the Bosch D-tect class — is a detection instrument for any wall: metal, plastic pipes, cables, at real depth in masonry and concrete. If your house is plasterboard throughout, a stud finder is enough. If it’s brick, block or anything pre-war, the scanner category is the one doing the work.
Why does my stud finder give different readings every pass? Almost always calibration. Single-sensor capacitive tools calibrate against the wall the moment you switch on — do that over a stud, a dab of adhesive or a patch repair and every subsequent reading is inverted or shifted. Recalibrate in a known-hollow bay, sweep slowly, and cross-check: two or three consistent hits at sensible spacing (400mm or 600mm in modern work) is believable; a “stud” every 150mm means the wall is dot-and-dab or the tool is confused. When results won’t settle, fall back on the magnet — fixings don’t move.
Scanning before drilling is a habit from the day job — on a PAS 2035 retrofit assessment, nothing gets drilled, cored or fixed to a wall until we know what’s in it, and the same discipline belongs in every toolbox.
